It has to be the Piazza San Marco & Ponte dei Sospiri

Piazza San Marco is the most famous square in Venice. A central gathering place for Venetians throughout history. It's home to San Marco Basilica, Doge’s Palace and the famous clock tower. Once described by Napoleon as the finest drawing room in Europe, it makes for the perfect place to start a visit to this beautiful city. Watch the costume shows, street theatre and of course the acrobatics and clowns!

A short walk to the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs), the famous limestone bridge crossing the Rio di Palazzo canal, connecting the Doge’s Palace and the prison. Commissioned by Doge Marino Grimani, the enclosed passageway was named for the “sighs” of the prisoners who passed over it. Tradition holds that if a couple kisses while passing underneath the bridge in a gondola they will enjoy eternal love!

Celebrating beauty in form & function

The grand canal and all its architecture viewed from your choice of water vessel is a must do. At the narrowest point of the canal stands the oldest bridge, Rialto. Constructed in the late sixteenth century it is one of finest examples of engineering and architecture. No meander down the grand canal would be complete without a stop at the Guggenheim for those who like to devour their art. Or if you are feeling more adventurous try the carnival treasure hunt.

A tapestry of piazzas, passages and secret doors

This is a favourite thing to do for a sense of authentic Venetian life. Venice is a walkable city and the atmosphere created by the narrow streets, tiny squares and beautiful bridges during Carnival makes it a great place to explore and unwind. The fish market in San Polo and the views from San Giorgio Maggiore are a must. Around every corner are masked and costume people from all over the world

When the sun sets the masks come alive

Indulge yourself in one of the many masquerade balls in Venice. Dating back to the 13th Century, they offer a glimpse into the city's fascinating past and its enduring love for mystery, elegance, and celebration. Adorn your mask and elegant attire and join the Venetians for dancing beneath the frescoed ceilings of a grand palazzo or wander through moonlit courtyards.

If it's all a little too much, escape to Murano and Burano

Two of the most beautiful islands near Venice, Murano & Burano are a must if you want a little downtime from the city. Burano, famous for its courlourful buildings and leaning clock tower is perfect for a more laid back vibe. Murano, world famous for its glass making offers a more intimate look at local Venetian life. Visit both in a day.

And finally the very serious question of where for our aperitivo and somewhere to eat!

For us it’s a Venetian spritz & Cicchetti in Campo San Polo or Campo Santo Stefano. We have many favourite places to eat in this city but a must-visit is Osteria la Zucca and Osteria Fanal del Codega. And of course if you have need for coffee, cake or ice-cream on your visit we love these – Caffe del Doge, Pasticceria Tonolo  and Gelateria il Doge!
